If The Big Moon isn’t a name you’ve heard of yet, that situation is almost certainly about to change. As the end of the year approaches, their name is being added to a lot of ‘Tips for 2016’ style lists and tonight sees a support slot with The Vaccines at Brixton Academy – their second support gig at the venue this week, (the first being two days before with Of Monsters And Men). This proves the fierce foursome must be doing something right.

The delicate guitars in the intro of The Road offer a placid introduction to the quartet. It’s not long however before delicate turns to distorted and the fuzzy riffs begin to create a beautiful ruckus onstage – whilst a welcome surprise midway through the set is the London girls’ cover of Madonna’s Beautiful Stranger, which they successfully give a rock n roll makeover.

In recent single Nothing Without You, Juliette Jackson croons about unrequited love in the breakdown of the track, singing: “Ooh baby, I know I need you”. The overall up-tempo track is playful and fun, much like the presence brought to the stage by the band.

The first sonic introduction to the band earlier this year was Eureka Moment, a fast and frenzied song with a brash drum beat and an alluring breakdown which oozes the with the essence of the Riot Grrrl scene. Something which is reflected perfectly in their live rendition of the track.

Set closer Sucker is deliciously distorted and grungy with lingering guitar riffs and the snarling vocals in the chorus: “It got colder every day but I wouldn’t change my mind”.

The four-piece’s set is deservedly well received in this South London venue, and as the band exit the stage, it’s clear to see it’s not the full moon up in the sky worth watching, it’s The Big Moon that you really want to look out for.
